first on 13... police are trying to make sense of a scary scene in des moines... they say two people were killed in an east side neighborhood last night... police received a call for help from the 42 hundred block of hull avenue at 7 p-m. when officers arrived at the home... they found the victims with gunshot wounds. police haven't explained the circumstances surrounding the shootings... or made any arrests. and they aren't releasing the victims' names until family members are notified. they say we'll learn more information about the case sometime this morning. the man.. accused of murdering a waukee man.. is due in court this week. 41 year old brendan mcguinness is being held in the dallas county jail. he's scheduled to enter a plea wednesday morning. police say mcguinness shot and

killed 42 year old gino risola earlier this month. they say it occurred as risola and his wife returned to their home on carefree lane. friends and family are remembering two des moines men... lost too soon... 60 year old richard hummel and 59 year old randall sonnenburg died last week. police say their car was struck by another in the 37 hundred block of hubbell avenue. about a dozen people gathered near there for a candlelight vigil in their memory. hummel and sonnenburg were lifelong friends... and those who knew them say they'll be missed. i love the support. i think its great that everybody's out here. they were loved by very many people... so... 53 year old deanna gliem is charged in connection with the crash. extra eyes will be out on the roads this week... looking for seat belt usage. authorities are stepping up enforcement for thanksgiving and the weekend after. they say it's one of the busiest... and

most dangerous... travel times for iowans. in fact... 3 people died last year on roads in the state during that period of time. 2 people died the year before. even so... iowa has one of the highest seat belt compliance rates in the nation... it's at nearly 93 percent. new technology is helping des moines police catch more crimes... the department has two squad cars equipped with "automated license plate readers." they're designed to alert officers stolen vehicles or parking violators on the road... by just taking a picture of a place. critics say the readers are an invasion of privacy... but officers say they allow them to do their jobs better... and faster. it all boils down to stopping and surpressing crime. this is a great tool we have to do that, and eliminate stolen cars or any crime we link to an iowa plate. police also say all information

iowa state has fired the head coach of its football team... paul rhoads is in his 7th season at i - s - u. while he's had some memorable victories... the numbers don't lie. the cyclones have an overall mark of 32 - 54... 16 - 44 in the big 12. the last 3 seasons have gone 3 wins... 2 wins... and now 3 again. there's been no bowl game in 3 years... and rhoads coached just 1 winning season. the nail in the coffin came over the weekend... at kansas state. the cyclones blew a 21 point halftime lead... and didn't score in the 2nd half. the team collapsed in the final 2 minutes... which included 2 fumbles... and 10 wildcat points. the 38 - 35 loss likely left athletic director jamie pollard no choice... it's not surprising, but it is

"dowling catholic" to host an early thanksgiving meal. dozens of families enjoyed ham and a multitude of side dishes last night... and it was all for free. organizers say there's no better time for an event like this... sad to say is all this negative stuff that is going on in the world, let's just have one moment and one point in this time to do something good, and that's what we want. it's the question of questions... what is the best food in your thanksgiving feast? according to a survey by "yahoo"... turkey is favored by 43 percent of americans. 18 percent reach for the stuffing first. 7 percent choose sweet potato casserole... pie... and mashed potatoes... hopefully not together. cranberry sauce is the loser... only 3 percent of americans prefer it

city.. en route to los angeles.. last night. officers evacuated all of the passengers... and 3 of them were questioned... a sweep of the area also didn't turn up anything. but some people say it's better to be safe than sorry... people were concerned with what was going on and their connecting flights. it's always worrying when something like that happens, you never know. the incident comes amid heightened security... after the attacks in paris that killed 130 people. authorities in major u-s cities are on alert after the paris attacks. and in new york... they're conducting active shooter drills... to be ready for anything. we have looked over the years, obviously... suicide belts in afghanistan and iraq and, now most recently, in paris, so i thought it was most appropriate in the last planning session -- which just was a couple of days

wife returned to their home on carefree lane. the iowa department of public safety will spread some holiday cheer today... the department will package full thanksgiving meals for 99 families in iowa. that's one family per county. it raised more than 5 thousand dollars to buy turkey... stuffing... cranberry sauce... green bean casserole... potatoes... and a pie for each. the remaining funds will be distributed to 15 food banks in the state. officials will hand deliver the meals to the families... and the checks to the food banks. an iowa farmer is showing his support for one democratic presidential candidate... in a big way... mike pattavina plowed a half acre of his soybean field in clarinda to spell "bernie"... as in bernie sanders. according to the "des moines register"... the "b" in the field is nearly 60 feet tall. pattavina says he did it all
